Spotty Dog Coaching

How can I best describe it? it's a unique, personalised development activity.  A confidential space providing you with the time to think and explore your current context or challenges, your way, whilst bringing clarity to your desired future.

A chance for creative thinking, exploration of options and solutions, and the opportunity map a path to your chosen future.  You are in the driving seat, determining your own goals, direction and outcomes.

My role as Coach is to listen and work in partnership with you to enable your curiosity, explore your thinking, encourage reflection, and provide the right level of  support & challenge to help you get there.

You are the expert in your own sphere and future.  You, will ultimately unleash your potential to get you to where you want to be.

How is Spotty Dog coaching delivered?

Our coaching can be delivered in the form that works for you.  The traditional method ie in-person and in a confidential indoor space,  via remote technologies such as Teams or Zoom, or by phone/Whatsapp. Our preference is to get outside when we can, interested? then read on...

Ever thought about completing your thinking in the great outdoors?
It's amazing how a breath of fresh air can unblock the most stubborn thought patterns, creativity can truly flow whilst in nature, whether it's coastal, countryside or park based. Some of my best thinking when faced with a challenge or decision has happened whilst walking the Spotty one.  (and you get some of your daily exercise completed too).

Outdoor coaching takes you away from the workplace or home, and can provoke deep creative thinking outside the box.   It doesn't have to be a taxing hike across  rugged moors, sessions can be held in the nearest park or country garden - walking or seated.  Perhaps you're more inspired by water and walking barefoot on a local beach works for you, dipping your toes in the surf.  Devon is blessed with an abundance of outdoor spaces that can cater for all abilities, fitness levels and preferences.  If you would like to try this style, we can find somewhere for everyone.  Not local to Devon?, then try our remote coaching service, whilst you are in your local outdoor space.

Our Coaching service is really tailored to your needs and before commencing our work together we will have a discovery conversation to understand your requirements and discuss how best to meet them.   From a single session to a longer term relationship, we are able to create a solution that meets your needs.

Suitable Topics for Coaching

Below are some of the more common areas where individuals have benefitted from coaching conversations. This list is a small selection and is not exhaustive, if you do not see your topic listed below, please do get in touch.  If we are are not the best option to support you, we may be able point you in the right direction via our network.

  • New to leadership or an experienced leader embarking on a new challenge within an existing or new organisation.
  • At a crossroads in your career and want the time and space to explore the direction you wish to take it, and form your plan of action.  Know where you want to take your career, but need to form that plan of action first.

What brought  me to coaching?

I hit a landmark birthday and very closely afterwards, a 30-year anniversary of working within people/HR related roles. These two events saw me pause to think about where I wanted my focus to be for the next phase of my working life.

As I reviewed the threads that had woven through my career truly sparking my curiosity and enjoyment, I appreciated it had been those opportunities to work with business leaders, individuals and teams supporting them to unlock the path forward.  Whether this was embarking on major projects and change, the next phase of someone's career journey or growing a fledgling business, it is truly an honour to be part of those thought-provoking moments and to partner with those individuals determining their future pathway.

Quite simply Coaching means I get to spend my time with people and see them grow and develop, how they want to. What a great role to have!

My background

My career in HR (then known as 'Personnel') started within learning and development with a recently established legal/investigatory organisation in the early 90s. It started small and grew and grew, and I also developed, achieving my CIPD accreditation along the way.

The time came to push my career forwards in the commercial sector and take on generalist partnering roles.  Working as part of the leadership team for the business functions I was supporting.  Whilst recruitment, talent management, employee relations, restructuring, reward and wellbeing were the bread and butter of my roles, I always ensured that learning and people development was incorporated, whether that was delivery of training and resources, but largely working 1-1 with leaders supporting their own personal growth and that of their teams.

I escaped from London to the Devon coast in 2006, and established myself as an independent consultant largely working with SME's.  From start ups reaching adolescence, established businesses looking to maintain market position and grow, through to those who were struggling to survive.  Throughout the years I have experienced both the highs and lows of business cycles, supporting both leaders and their people through the transitions.

I have been very fortunate with my career, Tesco, Universal Music, Pentland Brands, Landmark Information Group, have all been leaders in their fields and provided an absolute wealth of experience working with diverse populations, from technology, data & finance to design, buying, marketing and sales.

Through organic growth and transformation, acquisition, merger and divestiture, I have been immersed supporting  leaders and their people through these transformations, providing me with invaluable insight & understanding of the challenges faced.

Why Spotty Dog?

I was inspired by my rescue spot (our mascot), who joined me at Christmas 2010 and we have shared numerous adventures across the UK since.

Many hours spent outdoors, where her constant energy & curiosity in all environments has kept me both physically and mentally fit, often providing me with some of my most creative thinking time.  Whilst resting on the sofa in the warmth, she was an early adopter of generative attention listening skill, when I needed to think through solutions to challenges.  Those of you who have been lucky enough to share your life with an animal may find this resonates.

A quick web search of the term Spotty Dog, provides the Urban dictionary definition:

“Descriptive of that which is excellent. A synonym for Good, Super, Wicked, Fantastic, Brilliant and so on.”

I aim to provide a service that meets that description, and I will leave it to my clients to determine if I succeed in doing so.

My thanks to British Dalmatian Welfare for bringing us together.
